Before & After: My Story

So I figure that since I began writing this blog with the hope that it might help inspire others to begin, or continue, their quest for healthy living and weight loss, I should quickly share my story. I think it’s necessary that my readers are aware that I have not always been an athlete, and that I lived a very sedentary, unhealthy life prior to how you presently know me.  I want those of you who are currently struggling with your weight, or who have struggled in your past, to know that I can completely relate to you!  I’ve been there!  And I appreciate that I can truly understand the personal commitment that must occur in a person to make a permanent change for the better.

I came to a point a few years ago where I found myself completely unhappy with my appearance. I didn’t feel attractive, I hated how I looked, and I yearned for a change. So one day, I finally made the decision that enough was enough,  I was not going to live my adult life wishing I looked and felt differently, all the while never bothering to even remotely try to make a change.  I wanted to feel good about myself again.  So slowly but surely, through hard work, dedication, eating right, and persistence, I gained results that I never thought possible, and it’s created an amazing transformation in my life.  You can do this too.

I began my journey in March of 2011, and it took me about a year to lose a total of 50 pounds.  I began slowly, going to the gym 3 times per week to spend 30 minutes on the treadmill.  As time passed, I began gradually increasing the length of my workouts, challenging myself with new goals, running more than walking, and building my confidence. It was my darling husband who finally talked me into running my very 1st 5K.  I was intimidated!  People who ran outdoors were so… amazing!  I however, was not (in my opinion).  How could I bring myself to have the confidence to truly become one of those magnificent people I’d see effortlessly floating over the pavement?  How could I become a runner?

Well I finally took that first step outdoors, and I fell in love at that moment.  I wasn’t able to run the whole time, and I struggled as I pushed myself onward, but I was so proud of myself when I finished; I never looked back.   And now here I am, able to share the wonderful stories that create this blog.  I experienced an amazing transformation, all because I had the courage and the will to make a change.  Do you?

My theory is that I did not lose weight, I GOT RID of it, and it’s not coming back! Sure, I’m not perfect, and I find myself needing to refocus and get back to basics from time to time, but I’ve never given up, and that’s truly the biggest part of losing weight.  Never give up on yourself.  It may be difficult, and it may not always be fun, but it is so very worth it!

If you are currently doubting yourself, please know that it is so possible to make a positive and healthy change in your life! You can do anything you put your mind to, so lace up your shoes and get out the door!  You’ll be happy you did.

  1. Hello I love your blog – thanks for sharing. I’m currently on my second week of training for the Spartan Sprint August 17, 2013 in Calgary Alberta. I didn’t realize how out of shape I was until I started training – like you I want to get rid of my weight once and for all. Love the photo of you in the mud I’m so pumped for my daily workouts. Thanks again for sharing your story.

  2. So happy we chatted last night and you told me about your blog. You are such an inspiration. This may sound weird but I wouldn’t have guessed you as someone that was 50 lbs overweight. You have so much energy and have accomplished so much that I would have guessed you were someone that has always been in great shape. 🙂 Since May 1st I have got rid of about 40 lbs after being heavy for 3 years after my son was born. I have made some life style changes and feel so much better about myself. I still have a ways to go with my journey but I will get there.

    • Thanks Tracie! A part of me is glad I was once overweight, so those just beginning their journey can relate to me and see that a drastic change is possible. Had I always been fit, I don’t think I’d be able to reach people in the same way. Congrats on your own weight loss journey, that’s awesome! Keep up the great work, and please don’t hesitate to join in on an upcoming obstacle race! You’ll meet great people, have a blast, and be encouraged to better yourself every day! Thanks for following!

  3. U are so inspiring!!! I can relate to you in so many ways. I’ve lost 25 pounds and have nothing but my baby fat left in my tummy. As it gets harder to loose weight, sometimes I think that baby fat will never go away. But seeing your pictures, I have hopes again. Congratulations you really look great. Thanks for motivating us. 🙂

  4. Let me add that I am also getting addicted to the thought of running races. I did my first half marathon in February and I’m doing the Savage Race on April, 13. I’m so excited but at the same time worried on how I am going to do. Hope to follow your route and do as many races as life allows me to. Keep inspiring woman like us!

  5. That is EXACTLY what got me into racing. After my first 4 kids I needed motivation to get back in shape. I gained 80 pounds from pregnancy and I needed to figure out how to lose it. I started running mini triathlons locally here in cincinnati, right across the street from Kings Domain! Then I had to stop for 3 years for the birth of my next 2 kids. After 4 kids I found it hard to find motivation to get back into shape again. It was a lot harder this time around. But for fun I signed up for a mud race in early summer and LOVED it. I decided I needed to challenge myself even more and without any major training or experieince I signed up for Mud Guts and Glory. Everyone thought I was crazy. I signed up for the challenge heat without even thinking twice. And I started working out every morning at 4am while all the kids were still alseep so I could get a full workout in every day. And now I am addicted. I can’t wait to rubn another race and my weight is starting to shed again. I have lost 12 pounds and have 15 more to go. I hope to have hit that by the next MGG race in November so I can strut my new body and new found strength proudly. Seeing that you have been able to accomplish this is even more inspirational! 🙂

  6. That is so amazing. I wish I could be like you. I actually have the opposite story. I am currently trying to get back in shape as I was an athlete as a younger person but then became injured and now my knees, I feel, are permanently handicapped to a degree. It is scary. I hope I can come back somehow. It can just be so overwhelming at times. Keep doing what your doing though!!
